ACUTE PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SMOKING IN 18-25 YEARS OLDS SEDENTARY MALE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate comparatively the effects of active and passive smoking on physical activity of "two groups" of 18-25 years old sedentary male university students by measuring a) physical performance, b) reaction time, c) respiratory functions and d) breath and blood CO and COHb levels in pre-test and post-test experiments. The results of this study showed that one hour passive exposure to cigarette smoke resulted in higher decrease in physical performance exhaustion time of the young male adults than active smoking group in that time span. Results of paired samples t-test analysis revealed that one hour exposure to cigarette smoke at 30-35 ppm CO concentration resulted in nearly 7% (p < 0.05) increment in response time of the young male adults aged 18-25. Results of the study indicated that sitting in a dormitory room, canteen or a night bar for one hour or more may affect physical performance, may slow down the reaction times and significantly increases (more than 50% (p<0.01) the blood COHb and breath CO levels of young males.
