THE EFFECTS OF FOOTBALL SPECTATORS ON FOOTBALL PLAYER

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate home advantage, to examine the effect of this advantage on functional and dysfunctional aggression, and to compare home advantage between the soccer teams which have no supporter problem (have supporters everywhere in Turkey) and which have supporter problem (have almost no supporters except home territory) within the matches played in Turkish Super Soccer in two different seasons. For this purpose, matches played in Turkish Super Soccer League in 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons were scanned from newspaper and Internet archives. In this archive scanning, for soccer competitions; win, lose, goals scored, goals missed, cards punished and penalty kicks were collected for home and visitor teams, Collected data were evaluated by % analysis and within percentages t test. In Turkish Supper Soccer League, it is observed that teams generally won more games and scored more points in their home territories. It is also observed that teams which have been considered not to have supporter problem won more games and scored more goals in their home territories (p<. 05). On the other hand, teams which have supporter problem won more games in their fields, but won fewer games, scored fewer goals and given away more goals in away field (p<. 05).

When card and penalty kick punishments are investigated it is seen that home teams generally had more card and penalty kick punishments, but it is also seen that these differences were not statistically significant (p<. 05). This difference also remains same for teams, which have no supporter problem. However, when teams which have supporter problem were investigated, it is seen that they had more yellow card and penalty kick punishments in away field, whereas had more red card punishments in home field. But the obtained differences were not statistically significant (p>.05). The results showed that in Turkey because of attracting more spectators, being home team is an important advantage in football.
