ANALYZING THE UNSPORTSMANLIKE BEHAVIORS THAT BASKETBALL REFEREES’ MEET
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the unsportsmanlike behaviors that basketball referees’ meet and analyzing those behaviors considering some variables of referees. 192 basketball referees officiating in Turkey’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd league of basketball in the season of 2007-2008 voluntarily participated in this study. “Personal Information and Opinion Form” and “Unsportsmanlike Behaviors Questionnaire” were used in the study as the data-collection tools. At the end of this research, the opinion’s of basketball referees were evaluated; in addition, basketball referees’ scores collected through the questionnaire were differed from the age, gender, undergraduate faculty of the referees, years in officiating, number of match officiated in one season, officiating league of previous season and whether the referee professionally participated in that particular sport according to the resource of the unsportsmanlike behavior, according to the direction of the action, and the type of action taken place. Furthermore, basketball league division comparisons in terms of the unsportsmanlike behaviors were compared and it has been supported with the data that unsportsmanlike behaviors and their magnitude found to be representing differences from division to division.
