THE EFFECTS OF SODIUM BICARBONATE INGESTION IN DIFFERENT DOSAGE ON HIGH INTENSITY EXERCISE PERFORMANCE
Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03) ingestion in different dosages on high intensity exercise performance. With this aim 10 elite wrestlers at international level participated voluntarily as subjects. Their mean age was 23.10 ± 2.08 years. The subjects participated 3 times (once per week for each treatment) on cycle ergometer with one week interval. Each exercise session involved 125 % max V02 of subjects with 60 rpm on cycle ergometer until they were exhausted. Two hours before each test, the subjects consumed either a placebo ( control), or solution of 0.25 gr/kg body weight (D^ora solution of 0.35 gr/kg body weight (D2) with 500 ml fruit juice. Venous blood samples were taken before ingestion and two hours after ingestion ( before the exercise ) and at 5th min following the exercise. Blood samples from D1 and D2 were also taken during exercise at the equal time of which placebo treatment ended, in order to compare blood parameters of D1 and D2 whith the same time as placebo performance. Mean and Standart Deviation scores and differences between datas were analyzed by Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Test at p<0.01 significance level. At the end of the study, results showed that NaHC03 ingestion facilitated an increase in anaerobic performance significantly ( p < 0.01). The differences among the trials were determined as follows; 3.55 min. between placebo and D1t 2.06 min. between placebo and D2 and 1.49 min. between D1 and D2( P < 0.01). Results also showed that NaHC03 ingestion significantly increased pre-exercise HC03 - and pH of D1 and D2(P < 0.01). Althought HLa levels of D1 and D2 were significantly higher than placebo (P < 0.01), there was no important decrease on pH levels of them compared to placebo. The result suggested that NaHC03 can be used as an effective ergogenic aid and supports the supeculation that the increased extracellular buffering afforted by NaHC03 ingestion facilitated efflux of tf from working tissues, thus increasing pH and delaying fatique.
