THE EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL PROFILES OF ELITE ANDNON ELITE FEMALE VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the physical and physiological profiles of female volleyball players who joined 1994-1995 Turkish female volleyball league. A total of 32 female volleyball players who play different teams and league (first league 11, second league II, local league 10) voluntarily participated into this study. In addition, twelve sedentary female university students were participated into this study as a control group. Mean age. body height and body weight of the subjects were determined as follows; group A 22 2,56 years 176.54 6.25 cm, 64.09 6.25 kg, group B 20.63 1.80 years, 176.25 4.36 am. 63 4.71 kg, group C 21.3 0.96 years, 169.1 7.04 cm, 60.7 6.76kg, group D20 0.60years. 155.5 4.66cm 55.33 4.11 kg respectively. Standardized field and laboratory tests were used to determine the subjects physical and physiological profiles. Statistical analysis were done by using ANOVA AND paired t-test. As a result of this study. There were no significantly differences according to age, body weight and body height of all groups. Especially, physical characteristics of first and second league female volleyball players were found to be similar to female volleyball players which were demonstrated in foreign literatures. In terms of handgrip strength, significantly differences were found in between A-B and C-f) groups (P < 0.05). In contrast to B, C and D groups, the lowest body fat percentage was found in A group's female volleyball players (P < 0.05). Aerobic and anaerobic power scores of A group were found in significantly higher than other groups (P < 0.05). Howewer, this scores were found to be similar to basketball and handball players, the subjects aerobic and anaerobic power scores tolerably lower than foreign country's volleyball players. Also the significant differences were found in respiratory volumes and capacities between A and B,C, D groups (P < 0.05). The lowest resting heart rate and blood pressure scores were shown in A group. Moreover A-C and D group were determined to endo-mezomorph in contrast to B group. The present study indicated that except from aerobic power the physical and physiological profiles of Turkish elite female volleyball players quite similar to foreign countrys' female volleyball players.
