Abstract
There are studies which reports that physical education teachers and elementary schools students evaluates the Physical Education (PE) lessons to be inadequate to reach the lesson requirements (Çöker, 1991; Topkaya, 1995; Sunay, 1995). In another study it was stated that the students who attended PE lesson for 12 weeks were observed to have clear improved than those of not attend in motor skills and abilities (Yenal, 1996). These findings contradict on the effect of PE lessons aiming to reach physical development.
Therefore the main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physical education lessons performed one hour in first level and two hours in second level of elementary school on the students’ physical development. Totally 186 students from 4, 5, 6, 7 grade classes of 3 elementary schools in Ankara participated in this study. The physical performance measures were taken at the beginning of the first semester with pre-test of height, weight, vertical jump, sit-ups, sit and reach test, right-left grip strength, 10x5 sprint shuttle run and endurance shuttle run, at the end of the semester post-test of the same parameters. Paired t-test was used for statistical analysis.
Results of this study indicated that there were significant improvements between pre and post tests only sit-ups and 10x5 sprint shuttle run measurements for both male and female subjects.
