THE CRITERION RELATED VALIDITY OF THE d2 TEST OF ATTENTION IN THE CHILD ATHLETES: A PILOT STUDY

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the criterion related validity of the d2 Test of Attention in the child athletes in a pilot study. Thirty three boys (Mage = 10.76, SD = 1.12 yıl) and 20 girls (Mage = 10.83, SD = 1.09 yıl) tennis players from ODTÜ Sports Club and Ankara Tennis Club participated in the study. The subjects regularly compete in the tournaments organised by Turkish Tennis Federation. Initially, d2 Test of Attention was administered to the subjects in small groups at classroom settings. The reaction time (Multi-Operational Apparatus for Reaction Time (MOΨART)-35600) and eye-hand coordination (Automatic Mirror Trace) tests were performed by the subjects individually. The scores of Total Number processed (TN), TN minus Error (TN-E), and Concentration Performance (CP) of the d2 Test of Attention were transformed into z scores and general concentration performance (general CP) was calculated by using these z scores. The correlations between scores of the d2 Test, simple and choice reaction times, and eye-hand coordination were analysed by Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficent. Pearson correlation analysis showed that there were negative, significant relationships between TN-E, CP, general CP and mean values of simple reaction time (r = -.32, -.35, -. 38, p<0.05, respectively). However, no significant relationship was found between values of choice reaction time, eye-hand coordination and scores of the d2 Test. According to the results, lack of relationship between motor skills tests used as a criterion and scores of the d2 Test can demonstrate that criterion validity of d2 Test was not supported completely. But, these findings should be interpreted with caution because of presence of significant correlations between simple reaction time and the scores of d2 Test. In addition, the findings of the study may be affected by some reasons arising from sampling procedure (small sample size, young age group, athletes from only tennis etc.) and test applications. Therefore, testing criterion validity of d2 Test should be repeated in different samples (large sample size, athletes from variety sports, older age groups etc.).
