Child Terror Victims in Print Media

Abstract

Terrorism has affected Turkey for a long time while its severity and density has varied from time to time. Actions such as bombing, armed attacks on civilians, kidnapping, assassination, taking hostage, and hijacking are accepted as forms of terrorism in national and international laws. Being exposed to almost all forms of terrorist acts, Turkey has also witnessed child massacres. The presentation of the news traumatizing the majority of the society is important. There are studies suggesting that the newspapers’ styles of presenting the violence depend on the characteristics of the victim. These studies reveal that the newspapers’ styles of presenting violence differed between male and female victims. The news about male victims is usually presented by personalizing while the news about female victims is presented by using pronouns. Moreover, the studies show that presenting the news by personalizing increases empathy. Apart from ordinary violence, terrorism affects a larger proportion of society, and terrorists aiming at reaching their political goals through the dissemination of fear head towards actions with bigger influence. For press, there is a dilemma about the presentation of the news and its impact on society. It has the responsibility of not only estimating the impact of the news on the society but also announcing that the terrorists are the offenders of terrorist acts as much as the news itself. This study aims at investigating and discussing the newspapers’ styles of presenting child terror victims. The data were obtained from the newspaper archives. The content and headings of the news were analyzed and discussed in terms of the linguistic manner towards the violence victims and the connection between the action and offender.
