Turkey Perception of People Live in Beyt-El Türki, a Turkish Village in Yemen
Abstract
This study was prepared under the project namely “A Forgotten Turkish Village Far Away: Beyt-el Türki (Mahwit, Sana’a, Yemen)” which is funded by Prime Ministry of Republic of Turkey Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities and Gaziosmanpaşa University. The village was established in Yemen during the first sovereignty of Ottoman Empire and it is within the borders of Mahwit province of Republic of Yemen lately. The aim of this study is to reveal Turkey perception of Beyt-el Türki people, an important part of the Anatolian Turkish origin population of Yemen where is one of the geography of the Ottoman Empire had to leave in the historical process, by taking thoughts of Turkey within the context of state, identity and homeland. Their clothing, food, wedding and funeral traditions show some similarities with the features and cultural conditions of the country they live depending on the stay away from the main cultural patterns and have lived a hundred years with Yemenis. However, despite spatial differentiation, the presence of cultural continuity in various dimensions is an important feature. Their perception as they are Turks, Turkey is the fatherland or first homeland, and the proud of presence of Republic of Turkey are needed to focus on qualities.
