Evaluating the Opinions of Teachers and Students about the Secondary School 6th Grades Semantics Subjects

Abstract

In this research, it is aimed to identify the opinions of 6th grade students about semantics subjects, what kind of methods the teachers use to explain these subjects and the problems experienced in teaching these subjects. For the research, “personal information questionnaire” has been applied to 359 students attending different schools in Tokat in fall term of 2014-2015 academic year and “ Teacher information questionnaire” to 40 different Turkish language teachers working at various schools in Tokat. In the study, survey method was used , frequency and percentage analysis was made. In literature scanning made by researchers, it was seen that semantics and studies concerning the teaching of these subjects are quite inadequate. However, the semantics is one of the most important subjects of Turkish language tests in the exams made by both Ministry of National Education and Evaluation,Selection and Placement Centre. This indicates the importance of researches to be done about the semantics subjects. As a result of the research, it has been identified that the students mostly read story books ; they have difficulties particularly in understanding the abstract aspects of semantics; activities in workbooks are essential and effective in understanding semantics subjects; students have a common habit of using dictionary; those using proverbs, idioms and maxims in writing compositions or in daily life are few in number. Moreover, it has been seen that teachers have difficulty in teaching terminological meaning, connotations, synonyms; use drama and brain storming technique , make use of visuals and try to objectify the subjects by means of daily life examples in teaching abstract subjects; are unaware of contemporary theories and methods; have superficial knowledge about constructivist approach.
