The Antecedents and Outputs of University Image: A Literature Review Study
Abstract
This study aims to identify and synthesize the antecedents and outputs of university image within higher education institutions. The study adopts a structured literature review design supported by descriptive content analysis. The dataset consists of peer-reviewed articles published in education journals indexed in the Web of Science (SSCI and SCIE) between 1990 and 2024. A structured search and screening process, guided by PRISMA principles, resulted in the inclusion of 46 relevant studies. The findings move beyond descriptive summaries by organizing the literature into key thematic categories. Antecedents of university image are grouped into communication and marketing signals, academic and service quality, institutional characteristics, and external social influences. Outputs are categorized into student-related outcomes (e.g., satisfaction and loyalty), institutional outcomes (e.g., reputation), and behavioral outcomes (e.g., word-of-mouth and citizenship behavior). By synthesizing fragmented findings into a coherent framework, this study contributes to the literature by offering a clearer conceptual understanding of how university image is formed and what outcomes it produces. The proposed framework provides practical insights for higher education institutions seeking to strategically manage and enhance their image.
