Early Surgical Intervention in Traumatic Cervical Tracheal Rupture in A Pregnant Ewe: A Case Report
Abstract
Tracheal ruptures are rare, life-threatening lesions in ruminants that require emergency intervention. In this case, the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a 3.5-year-old heavily pregnant Awassi sheep with cervical tracheal rupture caused by a dog bite are presented. Clinical examination revealed dyspnea, stridor, and aphonia, whereas radiographs showed no evidence of subcutaneous emphysema. Through a ventral midline approach, a localized full-thickness tracheal tear was identified during surgery. Primary repair was achieved with absorbable simple interrupted sutures. No complications were observed in the postoperative period, pregnancy progressed without complications, and a healthy birth occurred. In conclusion, this case demonstrates that traumatic tracheal rupture in sheep can be successfully treated using early surgical intervention.
