The Effect of Subcutaneous L-carnitine on Some Biochemical Parameters of Energy Metabolism in Peripartum Cows

Abstract

The goal of this study was to evaluate subcutaneous injections of L-carnitine administered to peripartum cows and to show the effects of such injections on certain chemical parameters that affect energy metabolism. L-carnitine (Carnitine® , Santa Farma, Istanbul, Turkey) was administered to pregnant cows in Group I (n=10) during the last three weeks before parturition at a dose of 1g/animal/day, and between 0 and 7 days after parturition at a dose of 1g/animal/day. A placebo was administered to cows in Group II (n=10). Blood was taken in the prepartum period immediately prior to administering L-carnitine. Blood was also taken in the postpartum period on day 0 (the day of parturition) and on days 3, 7, 10 and 15. It was determined that for cows that received L-carnitine, serum glucose concentrations dropped on day 3 postpartum (P< 0.001), serum urea concentrations increased on day 7 postpartum (P< 0.05) and serum β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) concentrations dropped on day 10 postpartum (P< 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found in prepartum or postpartum serum concentrations of Non Esterified Fatty Acid (NEFA), triglyceride, cholesterol, creatinine, Ca or P. In conclusion, it was determined that administering subcutaneous L-carnitine to cows during the peripartum period changed the concentrations of BHBA, glucose and urea, which affect energy metabolism, but did not affect the other biochemical parameters that were studied.
