Turkey’s Relations With EU Under Suleyman Demirel’s Governments: Is It a Preference? Or An Obligation?

Abstract

Süleyman Demirel who is one of the most important political figures of Turkey, played a great role in taking shape Turkey’s internal and external policy. Demirel who also runs the state level, wanted to use their experience in politics and went into politics. May 27, 1960 after the military coup Demirel elected President to The Justice Party which takes place off the Democratic Party in 1964, showed the success of the party to govern alone in 1965 Demirel who made prime ministry seven times at certain intervals, became nineth president of Turkey between 1993-2000. Demirel who passed away recently, also came into play in Turkey-EU Relations, striked up pleasant relations with EU. Turkey's economic development and political stability have depended on being fullmembership to EU. In this sense this study will try to handle whether Demirel’s EU policy was a preference or an obligation.

Abstract

Türkiye’nin en önemli siyasi figürlerinden biri olan Süleyman Demirel, Türkiye’nin iç ve dış politikasının şekillenmesinde büyük rol oynamıştır. Devlet kademelerinde de çalışan Demirel, deneyimlerini siyasette kullanmak istemiş ve siyasete atılmıştır. 27 Mayıs 1960 askeri darbesinden sonra kapatılan Demokrat Parti yerini aldığı düşünülen Adalet Partisi’ne 1964 yılında Genel Başkan seçilen Demirel, partisini 1965 yılında tek başına iktidar yapma başarısını göstermiştir. Belli aralıklarla yedi kez Başbakanlık yapan Demirel, 1993-2000 arasında Türkiye’nin dokuzuncu Cumhurbaşkanı olmuştur. Yakın zamanda hayatını kaybeden Demirel, Türkiye-AB ilişkilerinde de etkili olmuş, AB ile iyi ilişkiler kurmaya çalışmıştır. Demirel için Türkiye’nin ekonomik kalkınması ve siyasi istikrarını kazanması AB’ye tam üyeliğine bağlı olmuştur. Bu anlamda, bu çalışma Demirel’in AB politikasının bir tercih mi yoksa bir zorunluluk mu olup olmadığını ele almaya çalışacaktır.
