Assessment of the correlation between serum elafin concentrations and disease severity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein levels in psoriasis patients
Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to examine elafin levels between individuals with psoriasis and a healthy control group and to evaluate the relationship between elafin concentrations and disease severity, inflammatory markers, and lipid parameters.
Method: The study sample included 40 psoriasis individuals in the Hatay Mustafa Kemal University Hospital Dermatology outpatient clinic and 40 healthy individuals matching the patient group. All subjects were characterized using demographic information, physical measurements, and biochemical markers.
Results: It was found that elafin levels were significantly higher in psoriasis patients than in the healthy control group (p=0.028). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol levels increased, whereas high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels decreased. Elafin levels positively correlate with LDL and total cholesterol.
Conclusion: Elafin levels were higher in psoriasis patients, but this phenomenon was unrelated to disease severity or inflammatory markers.The correlation between elafin and lipid markers indicates a possible association between elafin and metabolic changes in psoriasis.
