Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of cyber dating abuse on self-esteem and achievement-oriented motivation. With the widespread use of social media all over the world, new forms of socialization and communication have emerged. The recent increase in the use of messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, tools that provide instant communication, and social media channels such as Facebook has caused interpersonal relationships to gain importance and brought the issue of cyber dating abuse to the agenda as one of the current problems of recent years. When looking at the literature, it is seen that research on the factors associated with cyber dating abuse is quite limited. Findings will be obtained regarding the effects of individuals' level of exposure to cyber dating abuse on their self-esteem and academic motivation. According to the results obtained, it was seen that the level of exposure to cyber dating abuse had a statistically significant positive relationship with self-esteem and a statistically significant negative relationship with success-oriented motivation. These findings were discussed in the light of the literature. This research was carried out using a correlational design, one of the quantitative research methods. The sample of the study consists of 276 individuals, 226 female and 50 male, who receive academic education. The number of samples representing the universe was calculated using power analysis. Cyber Dating Abuse Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Success-Focused Motivation Scale were used as data collection tools. SPSS and AMOS Programs were used to analyze the data in the research. It was calculated with path analysis from structural equation models.
