Determination and Examination of the Interdisciplinary Characteristics of Wayfinding Design: Istanbul Commerce University, Küçükyalı Campus Case

Abstract

Design language and readability concepts change rapidly as a result of advancements in technology and production methods. Along with technological developments, spatial design approaches have started to be considered centered on user experience. As a result of this change, architectural approaches gain an up-to-date and contemporary quality with the applied education models brought by a new expertise. Wayfinding design is one of the main expertises focused on user experience, merging architecture and graphic design into one. It is an interdisciplinary design approach that needs to be developed according to the target audience, providing suitability for the space and existing in harmony with structural elements. The result of wayfinding design is a hybrid product that can be interpreted as an architecture-centric user experience. The case study presented in the article is the 14-week course outcomes carried out by the author and students at the Istanbul Commerce University, interior architecture class. The research aims to identify the interdisciplinary design features and user experience qualities of wayfinding design by associating the described project with the selected literature, and to provide information on the educational achievements in undergraduate education. In the study, detailed explanations and results relevant to the applied 14 week-long project based on wayfinding design that has been managed by the author, are presented. The primary originality of the research is the aim of explaining the orientation of wayfinding design method in terms of an integrated approach to graphic design and architecture, in line with the objectives of the study.

Yönlendirme Tasarımının Disiplinlerarası Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi ve İncelenmesi: İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi, Küçükyalı Kampüsü Örneği

Abstract

Teknolojik gelişmelerle beraber, mekansal tasarım yaklaşımları, kullanıcı deneyimi ekseninde ele alınmaya başlanmıştır. Tasarım dili ve okunabilirlik kavramı, teknoloji ve üretim yöntemlerindeki gelişmeler sonucunda değişim geçirmektedir. Mobil teknolojilerin günlük yaşama entegrasyonu, özellikle grafik dilin güncelleşmesine yol açarken, piktogram ve sembollerin kullanımına yönelik yeni yöntemler sağlamaktadır. Kamusal yapılarda düzenleyici mesajlar iletmek için alternatif yollar bulunması amacıyla görsel tasarımda yenilikçi iletişim yaklaşımları yaygınlaşmaktadır. Bu durum, daha işlevsel ve kalıcı bir iletişim yöntemi yaratarak sağlanan etkileşimin yeniden kavramsallaştırılmasına yol açmaktadır. Müzeler, havaalanları, oteller gibi kamuya açık alanlarda yön bulma senaryosunun etkin kavramsal gelişimi, projelerde hedeflenen iletişim değerleri ve kullanıcı deneyimi hedeflerine ilişkin istenen tasarım sonuçlarının elde edilmesi açısından önem taşımaktadır. Yönlendirme tasarımı, hedef kitleye göre geliştirilmesi gereken, mekana uygunluk oluşturan ve yapısal unsurlarla uyum içinde var olan disiplinlerarası bir tasarım yaklaşımıdır. Mimarlık eğitimi, yeni uzmanlıkların getirdiği uygulamalı eğitim modelleriyle bütünleşerek güncel ve çağdaş bir nitelik kazanmaktadır. Mimarlık ve tasarım kavramlarının ele alınış biçimleri açısından kullanıcı deneyimi odağında gerçekleşen yaklaşımların başında, yönlendirme tasarımı gelmektedir. Yönlendirme tasarımının sonucu, mimari merkezli kullanıcı deneyimi olarak yorumlanabilecek karma bir yaklaşımdır. Kalitatif bir yöntemle makalede sunulan örnek çalışma, İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi, Mimarlık ve Tasarım Fakültesi, İç Mimarlık Bölümünde yürütücü yazar ve öğrenciler tarafından sürdürülen 14 haftalık ders çıktılarıdır. Araştırma, açıklanan projenin seçilen literatürle ilişkilendirilmesi yoluyla yönlendirme tasarımına ait disiplinlerarası tasarım özellikleri ve kullanıcı deneyimi niteliklerinin belirlenmesini amaçlayarak, lisans eğitiminde sağlanan kazanımlarla ilgili bilgi sağlanmasını hedeflenmektedir. Bu bağlamda, tasarım stüdyolarına danışmanlık hizmeti sağlayan yazarın, yönlendirme tasarımı konusu ekseninde, eğitmen kimliğiyle bağlı olduğu kurumda gerçekleştirdiği uygulamalı dersin detaylı açıklamaları ve sonuçları paylaşılmaktadır
