Effects of Selected Anthropogenic Stressors (Insecticides, Herbicides and Dumpsite Waste) on the Microbial Activities and Physicochemical Properties of Soils

Abstract

This study determined the physicochemical and microbial activities of insecticide and herbicide treated soils. We also determined the physicochemical properties of dumpsite soils. Soil samples were treated with insecticides (Cyperforce and Chloropyriphos) and herbicides (Nicosulfuron + Atrazine, 2,4 Dimethyl ammonium, Atrazine, Xtravest, Glyphosate and Paraquat). Microbial carbon biomass, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, organic matter, electrical conductivity and soil acidity wasdetermined in soil samples. Heavy metals were estımated in dumpsite soils using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Bacterial and fungal population were also analyzed using the Quebec colony counter. Microbial respiration, dehydrogenase activities and phosphatase activities were determined. There were significant changes (P≤0.05) in the physicochemical properties of soils after treatment with Celosia argenteae extract, Cyperforce and Chloropyrios. The total viable counts reduced from 24.8 ×106 cfu g-1 to 18.2 ×106 cfu g-1 in Chloropyriphos and 12.8 ×106 cfu g-1 in Cyperforce. The total coliform count reduced from 1.2 ×106 cfu g-1 to 0.7×106 cfu g-1 in Chloropyriphos and 0.6×106 cfu g-1 in Cyperforce. The bacterial population reduced significantly (P≤0.05) after initial treatment with 2,4 D and Nicosulfuron +Atrazine herbicide. However, when the treatment was increased to ×2 the recommended rate the bacterial population showed a significant increase (P≤0.05) in the viable counts of bacteria which was however still significantly lower than the control. There was a significant increase (P≤0.05) in the phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities from the 2nd to the 10th day of incubation. The soil microbial respiration increased from the 0h to the 25th day of respiration. Heavy metals were significantly higher (P≤0.05) in dumpsite soils compared to the control. Treatment of soil samples with insecticides and herbicides caused significant changes in soil physicochemical properties. Treatment of soil samples with 2,4 Dimethyl ammonium and Nicosulfuron + Atrazine caused significant reduction in soil nutrient status. Microbial activities of soils treated with atrazine, Xtravest, Glyphosate and Atrazine was significantly higher than what we obtained in control soil samples. Pseudomonas spp and Penicillum spp were the most prevalent bacteria and fungi isolated from the Cyperforce and Chloropyriphos treated soils.
