Weed Control with Flaming and Cultivations in Sunflower

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different flame weeding applications on five weed species and on yield in sunflower cultivation. A field experiment was conducted using nine different treatments and a control. Six flame weeding treatments were applied using two LPG doses (60 and 75 kg ha⁻¹) and three application techniques (surface, between-row, and cross-flaming). In addition, to compare flame weeding with mechanical control, three treatments were established: flame applications combined with tillage and hoeing, and hoeing alone. Weeds at three different growth stages were treated, and visual control rates (%) were assessed at 1, 7, and 14 days after treatment (DAT), with four replications. At 14 DAT, dry matter was determined using the oven drying method. The effectiveness of flame treatments was evaluated by comparing dry matter with the control. For sunflowers, head diameter, plant height, and seed weight were measured, and treatment effects on yield were analyzed using multiple comparison tests. The highest yield (2446 kg ha⁻¹) was obtained from the combined treatment of flaming (60 kg ha⁻¹) and hoeing. When weed control efficiency was considered independently, the most effective result was achieved with flame application at 75 kg ha⁻¹.
