Aims: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the birth weight, height, head circumference and ponderal index of full term and preterm infants born in Aydın. Methods: This study was performed on 554 male and 506 female infants who were born at the Aydın Maternity Hospital and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Medicine between November 1998 and September 1999. Nine hundred forty öve of these infants were full-term, 115 were preterm. Results: The arithmetic means±standard deviation (SD) of weight, height, head circumference and ponderal index was found to be 3316±446 gr, 49.9±1.7 cm, 34.6±2.4 cm and 2.66±0.28 , respectively, for the term babies, and 2370±522 gr, 45.8±5.5 cm, 32.4±2.4 cm, 2.44±0.36, respectively, for the preterm babies. Conclusion: The mean birth weight, height, head circumference and ponderal index of males were higher than those of females in full term infants (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001, respectively). According to the ponderal index evaluation, 14.4% of the full-term infants and 10.8% of the preterm infants were in fetal malnutrition group.
