Determination of the effects on growth and nutrient content of tomato seedlings of spent mushroom compost

Abstract

In this study, the effects of spent mushroom compost utilization with the mixture of different growing media on the seedling quality and nutrient contents of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicon cv. Sedef F1) were determined. For this purpose, fresh and aged spent mushroom compost, turf and perlite were used and the seedlings of growth parameters and nutrient contents were investigated. Effects of these substances on the seed germination, seedling height, stem diameter, leaf number, seedling fresh weight and N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu contents were studied. As a result of this study, the effects of growing media on the seedling growth were found to be significant except for germination percentage, while the aged spent mushroom compost applications (100% ASMC and 30% Perlite + 70% ASMC) on seedling growth were effective, fresh spent mushroom compost applications (100% FSMC and 30% Perlite + 70% FSMC) on nutrient contents were more effective. Consequently, it was determined that spent mushroom compost mixtures could be used as alternative media instead of turf and spent mushroom composts should be kept for a long time for get rid of potential risks because of the high salt contents of fresh composts.
