The Impact of Antenatal Education on Pregnant Women’s Knowledge of Safe Motherhood: An Evaluative Study

Abstract

Aim: Antenatal education aims to inform pregnant women about delivery, postpartum processes, and baby care. This study evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of pregnant women who did and did not receive antenatal education at the Gülhane Training and Research Hospital (GTRH). Method: This comparative cross-sectional study included 100 pregnant volunteers (50 educated, 50 non-educated). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Beyond bivariate analyses, multivariate binary logistic regression was performed to control for confounding factors. Significance level was set at p≤0.050. Results: No significant differences were found in sociodemographic characteristics between groups (p>0.050). Educated women demonstrated significantly higher knowledge regarding vaginal douching avoidance, delivery exercises, episiotomy, and birth bag contents (p≤0.050). Significant differences were also observed in attitudes toward avoiding alcohol, X-rays, caffeine, processed foods (p≤0.050). Conclusion: Antenatal education significantly improves the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of pregnant women. Strengthening and expanding these educational programs in health institutions is essential for enhancing maternal and infant health outcomes.
