“Sumerian dKubaba and dLamma” in the Process of Historical and Geographical Transformation

Abstract

The source of the power attributed to gods and goddesses in the ancient world was shaped by geography, political conditions, and the continuity of belief systems as they spread to new lands through migration. Consequently, gods and goddesses, along with their symbols, allowed the cultures that worshiped them to be identified not only culturally but also politically and economically. While cuneiform records from Mesopotamia provide information on the perception of fertility, archaeological findings related to the origins of this cult in Anatolia date back to the earliest stages of settled life. In Anatolia, it was found that femininity played a central role in the Mother Goddess belief and its tangible manifestations. Meanwhile, early records of the fertility cult in Mesopotamia depicted divine pairs of gods and goddesses. These sacred couples, considered the sources and protectors of fertility, abundance, and prosperity, were worshiped under different names by various peoples. This traditional approach, which began in Mesopotamia, also appeared in the writing traditions of Anatolia and the Eastern Mediterranean. This study examines the representations of the goddess Kubaba and the god Lama, drawing on records from the Early and Middle Iron Ages, where the names of these deities were documented.
