Training of Turkish language teachers and Turkish literature teachers in Macedonia

The Turkish nation has ruled over a wide geography throughout history. In particular, the Balkans has a special importance in the Turkish history because it is considered as a part of Turkish homeland culturally as for the conquests of the Ottoman Empire, and one can still see the presence of Turkish people and culture in this geography today. Macedonia is one of the Balkan countries with high population of Turks. It is, at the same time, a cosmopolitan, multilingual and multicultural country. Education in one’s own native language (Turkish) is important issue to ensure the continuation of Turkish people’s presence in the region. Turks living in Macedonia struggle to adhere to a Turkish identity and Turkish education. The curriculum, the textbook, and the inadequacy of the teaching staff are the main problems. A good teacher training system is needed to for the sustainability of quality Turkish education. Likewise, a good, qualified program can be used for the training of prospective teachers. This research aims to examine and evaluate the undergraduate programs of Turcology departments in Macedonia that focus on teaching Turkish and Turkish language and literature. The study employs document review method. The study universe of the research is the Undergraduate Programs of Turkish Language and Literature Department in Macedonia. Descriptive analysis and frequency was used to analyse the programs. It was found out that the programs were different from each other in terms of course content and the intensity of major area courses. The research also showed that pedagogical content knowledge courses are insufficient and some suggestions are presented accordingly.
