Investigation of obesity and nutrition habits in a middle school in İzmir province

Abstract

Aim: Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents risk for health by World Health Organization. Contrary to what is believed, obesity is not only a common condition among adults but it is a chronic, multifactorial disorder which may present at childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between nutrition, living habits and obesity in a middle school. Material and Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 284 middle school students (10-14 years old). In all students, body mass index, weight for height, body mass index percentile and body mass index standart deviation values were calculated. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. A p value<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results:Overall, 284 children were included to the study: 159 boys (56.7%) and 125 girls (43.3%). Mean age was 12.10±1.27 years in the study population. No significant correlation was detected between obesity and physical activity score (p=0.229). A significant correlation was detected between obesity in children and maternal and paternal obesity (p=0.046, p=0.046, respectively). Conclusions:The study showed that approximately one-fifth (20.8%) of children aged 10-14 years are obese or overweight. Again, in this age group, obesity was correlated with maternal and paternal obesity and affected by diet of the family. Physical activity might not be associated with obesity. These results should be supported by further studies.
