Turkish Pre-Service Physical Education Teachers’ Self-Reported Use and Perceptions of Teaching Styles

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the Turkish Pre-Service Physical Education Teacher Education Students (PPETES) teaching styles and perceived perceptions. The participants were selected from 9 universities with physical education teacher education departments across seven geographical regions in Turkey. A total nummber of 330 senior pre-service teachers voluntarily participated in the study. A validated Turkish version of Kulinna and Cothran’s (2003) “Physical Education Teachers’ Use of Teaching Styles and Perceptions of Styles Questionnaire” and demographic variables were collected. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), Independent Sample T-test and descriptive statistics were used for statistical analysis. According to the MANOVA, significant differences were observed between the participants’ previous sport experiences (Wilks’ Λ = .92, F(11,284) = 2.20, p < .05), university (Wilks’ Λ = .67, F(88,1871) = 1.31, p < .05) and preferred teaching styles. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed on the use of teaching style and sex of students (Wilks’ Λ = .96, F(11,284) = 1.09, p > .05). The independent sample t-test results indicated that the participants had significantly higher perceptions to styles that they reported to prefer than those who did not prefer to use them (p < .05). Descriptive findings showed that most used teaching style was teacher-centered “Command” (M=3.86, SD=.77) and “Practice” (M=3.75, SD=.77) styles. In the light of the findings, it could be stated that all courses in physical education teacher education curriculum should be structured to help develop content knowledge and skills as well as pedagogical content knowledge and skills. It should be noted that the successful implementation of the updated pyhical education curriculum in primary (2006) and secondary (2009) schools is directly related to the ability to use teaching styles, which is a prerequisite in “physical education teacher competencies”.
