Lost in Screens, Lost in Bonding: How Parental Phubbing Shapes Adolescent Emotional Autonomy through Attachment
Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of attachment styles in the relationship between adolescents' perceived parental phubbing and their emotional autonomy. The study employed a correlational model, one of the quantitative research methods. A total of 523 high school students participated in the study, of whom 375 were female (71.6%) and 149 (28.4%) were male. Data were collected using the Perceived Parental Phubbing Scale, the Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory II - Middle Childhood Version, and the Emotional Autonomy Scale. Hypotheses were formulated based on theoretical information, the data were analyzed, and then a structural equation model was created and tested. According to the results of the mediation model, while there is a strong negative direct effect between perceived parental phubbing and emotional autonomy, this effect decreased but remained significant when the variables of anxious and avoidant attachment were included in the model. Thus, it was concluded that attachment styles have a partial mediating effect. The findings were discussed in the light of the literature, and various recommendations were presented.
