Abstract

The effective maternal factors for the fetal development

It is stated that maternal factors such as maternal age, nutrition, obesity, and stress may have negative effects on fetal development in pregnancy. In this study, existing literature related to effects of maternal factors on fetal development has been reviewed. It is stated that maternal factors may effect mother's, as well as fetus', healt as a result of changing feto-maternal physiology in pregnancy. Relationships between maternal factors and low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, and spontaneous abortus were reported. On the other hand, maternal factors also associated with different kind of birth defect such as neural tube defects, oral cleft, cardiovascular, central neural, respiratory, and urinary system defects. Therefore further research is needed on effects of maternal factors on fetus.

Key words: Fetus, fetal development, maternal factors
