Evaluation of Dentistry Faculty Students' Opinions on Specialization in Endodontics

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: This study aims to investigate the factors affecting the specialization field preferences of dentistry students and to evaluate their perspectives on the Endodontics department and their views on specialization in the Endodontics department.
Methods: A survey consisting of 12 questions was prepared to be applied to 4th and 5th year students of Kırıkkale University Faculty of Dentistry. The survey was applied to a total of 169 students, 84 of whom were 4th year and 85 of whom were 5th year. Chi-square test was used for analysis and p<0.05 was accepted as significant.
Results: 50.3% of students stated that they first became familiar with the Endodontics department during the preclinical period. 53.85% of students stated that they were most impressed by their clinical experiences regarding Endodontics. The first department that students dreamed of specializing in was Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. 79.88% of the participants stated that the department they found easiest to see patients in was Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, while 46.75% stated that the department they found most difficult to see patients in was Endodontics.
Conclusion: It was found that the most effective factor in students' choice of specialisation was their interest in the specialisation, according to the results of our study. Although students' views on the future need for the Endodontics department were positive, the Endodontics department was selected as the department that students least wanted to specialize in, along with Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Endodonti Anabilim Dalında Uzmanlaşma Konusundaki Görüşlerinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma diş hekimliği fakültesi öğrencilerinin uzmanlık alanı tercihlerine etki eden faktörleri araştırmayı ve Endodonti bölümüne bakış açılarını ve Endodonti bölümünde uzmanlaşma konusundaki görüşlerini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Kırıkkale Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi 4. Sınıf ve 5. Sınıf öğrencilerine uygulanmak amacıyla toplam 12 soruluk bir anket hazırlandı. Anket 84’ü 4. Sınıf, 85’i 5. Sınıf olmak üzere toplamda 169 öğrenciye uygulandı. Analiz için Ki-kare testi kullanıldı ve p<0,05 anlamlı olarak kabul edildi.
Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %50,3’ü Endodonti bölümünü ilk preklinik dönemde tanıdığını belirtti. Öğrencilerin %53,85’i Endodonti ile ilgili en çok klinik deneyimlerinden etkilediklerini belirtti. Öğrencilerin uzmanlık yapmayı hayal ettikleri ilk bölüm Ağız, Diş ve Çene Cerrahisi, bölümüydü. Çalışmaya katılanların %79,88’i hasta bakmayı en kolay buldukları bölümün Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi olduğunu ifade ederken, %46,75’i ise hasta bakmayı en zor buldukları bölümün Endodonti olduğunu belirtti.
Sonuç: Çalışmamızın sonuçlarına göre öğrencilerin uzmanlık alanı seçimlerindeki en etkili faktörün uzmanlık dalına duyulan ilgi olduğu bulundu. Öğrencilerin Endodonti bölümüne gelecekteki ihtiyaç konusundaki görüşleri olumlu olsa da, Endodonti bölümü; Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi ile birlikte öğrencilerin uzmanlık yapmayı en az istedikleri bölüm olarak seçildi.
