Colour Stability of a Novel Alkasite-Based Composite Resin Restorative Material in Comparison with Giomer-Based, Microhybrid, Nanohybrid Composite Resin Restorative Materials
Abstract
Background: This study evaluated the colour stability of a novel alkasite-based composite resin restorative material compared to giomer-based, microhybrid, and nanohybrid composite resins. Assessments were performed at three-time intervals—24 hours, 1 week, and 1 month—following immersion in distilled water, red wine, and coffee.
Materials and Methods: Samples shaped like discs were prepared from four different composite resin restorative materials (alkasite-based, giomer-based, microhybrid, and nanohybrid). The samples were immersed in distilled water, coffee, or red wine, and colour changes were measured on days 1, 7, and 28 using CIE LAB values obtained through spectrophotometry. The baseline colour and changes on different days were recorded as ΔE1, ΔE2, and ΔE3, with results evaluated MANOVA statistically at p < 0.05.
Results: Throughout the study, all restorative materials showed discolouration over time. The colour change occurred more in the alkasite-based and giomer-based materials compared to the microhybrid and nanohybrid composite resin materials (p<0.05). Coffee and red wine resulted in notably greater staining compared to distilled water (p<0.05).
Conclusion: This study concludes that the colour stability of restorative materials is significantly influenced by their composition, the type of staining agent, and the duration of exposure. Alkasite-based and giomer-based materials exhibited the most notable discolouration, particularly when exposed to coffee and red wine. This finding highlights the importance of selecting appropriate materials to achieve enduring aesthetic results.
