6 Şubat 2023 Depremleri Sonrası Artan Depresyon-Anksiyete-Stres Düzeyi ile Oral Hijyen Alışkanlıkları Arasındaki İlişkinin Değerlendirilmesi

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 2, 298 - 303, 22.08.2025

Abstract

Evaluation of the Relationship Between Increased Depression-Anxiety-Stress Levels and Oral Hygiene Habits After the February 6, 2023 Earthquakes

Year 2025, Volume: 12 Issue: 2, 298 - 303, 22.08.2025

Abstract

Background: This study aims to investigate the relationship between depression-anxiety-stress levels and oral hygiene habits in patients who visited Gaziantep University Faculty of Dentistry after the earthquake.
Methods: The study included 350 patients who applied for examination at Gaziantep University Faculty of Dentistry. The survey consisted of questions about demographic data, medical history, oral hygiene habits, earthquake experiences, and the DASS-21 (Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale-21) questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0 for Windows. The normality of numerical variables was evaluated using the Shapiro-Wilk test. For non-normally distributed variables, the Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparisons between two groups, and the Kruskal-Wallis test for comparisons across three or more groups. Chi-square tests were applied to examine associations between categorical variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant.
Results: Significant relationships were found between DASS-21 depression, anxiety, stress levels, gender, and psychological disorder. Patients with higher depression levels and those who experienced job or close family loss after the earthquake had a notably lower frequency of tooth brushing. The negative psychological impact of the earthquake led to the neglect of oral hygiene habits. Women’s personal oral health evaluations were poorer than men’s, and unexpectedly, their oral hygiene habits were not better, suggesting that women who experienced psychological distress post-earthquake neglected their oral care.
Conclusion: The earthquake increased depression, anxiety, and stress levels in some patients, negatively impacting their oral hygiene habits. Raising awareness and providing guidance on oral hygiene practices after such events is an important approach.
