Determining the Students' Attitudes Towards STEM: E-Twinning Project from STEM Club to STEM School

Abstract

In the study, the attitudes of primary schools towards STEM education approach were examined. The eTwinning project “From STEM club to STEM school” was created to integrate the STEM education approach into the program. The aim of our project is to create appropriate plans that are integrated with the project partner teachers. A questionnaire was used in the study. 215 students in 3rd and 4th grade in the project constitute the working group of the research. The data in the study were collected with the STEM Primary School Attitude Scale, which was developed by Faber, Wiebe, Corn, Townsend, and Collins (2013) and adapted to Turkish by Özyurt, Kuşdemir, and Başaran (2018), consisting of 37 item sub-dimensions. It was analyzed with the SPSS 21 Program. The reliability score of the scale was found to be .95. In the study, it was found that students' attitudes towards STEM education were at a good level. It was determined that the mathematics lesson attitudes of the students attending the science center differ significantly. According to the findings of the study, it was determined that there was a significant difference between STEM and primary school students who went to the science center, made experiments outside the classroom, and used smart boards in the classroom. It was determined that there was no significant difference between the STEM students who experimented in the class, used the laboratory in the lesson, were interested in project assignments, participated in project competitions, and received information about STEM from an expert. A correlation was found between STEM sub-dimensions of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
