Review of Studies on Specific Learning Disabilities in Turkey

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review scientific articles, master thesis, thesis of specialization in Medicine and dissertations on specific learning disabilities which were published between 1972 and 2017 in Turkey. For this study, ERIC, EBSCO, Council of Higher Education Thesis Center and Google Scholar databases were searched by using specific learning disabilities, learning disabilities, learning disorder, math difficulties, reading difficulties, writing difficulties, writing disorder, math disorder, reading disorder, dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia keywords and 189 studies met the inclusion criteria of this study were examined. The results show that the number of studies in this field has increased steadily especially in the last 10 years. It has been observed that studies have been carried out in a wide range of fields from mathematics to art and design science in 31 different subjects. Results of this study indicates that scientific research needs to be increased, especially in interdisciplinary studies, for the development of the literature on specific learning disabilities in Turkey. In this context, there is also a need for more scientific studies on specific learning disabilities in the field of special education.
