Determination of STEM -Educated Teachers’ Views on Financial Literacy and the Relationship Matrix

Abstract

In parallel with the development of financial technologies and the synergistic effect they create together, financial literacy has a very important impact in terms of spreading finance to the grassroots. This effect is expected to be further strengthened by STEM education. This study aims to reveal the relationship between financial literacy and STEM by associating the dimensions representing both fields. For this purpose, interview forms consisting of 5 dimensions and 10 questions were sent to the participants consisting of 23 teachers who received STEM education and were teaching in Turkey. The data obtained were evaluated using a descriptive analysis technique. The reliability of the study was ensured, and a one-sample chi-square test was conducted to determine which dimension of STEM is more related to financial literacy. The results of the study, which evaluated financial literacy in five dimensions (awareness, knowledge, skills, attitudes-behaviors and financial gain) and STEM in four dimensions (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), reveal a strong relationship between both fields. The results of the study clearly show how important it is for policy makers to give due importance to STEM education, to open up application areas, and to take the necessary measures for its development.
