NAVIGATING A PROMISING MEDIA OF DIGITAL COMIC FOR DISTANCE ENGLISH LEARNING: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
Following the PRISMA framework, this research used a systematic literature observation method by analyzing 17 peer-reviewed articles from reputable indexed journals. The findings showed that digital comics effectively improve three key learning domains: reading comprehension, written production, and vocabulary acquisition. Moreover, this research revealed three prominent teaching methods integrated with digital comics: project-based learning, task-based learning, and autonomous learning. Furthermore, research results manifested popular platforms for creating and presenting digital comics: Pixton, Webtoon, and Toondo. A cross-country analysis highlights that research on digital comics is concentrated in Indonesia (76%), Ecuador, and Mexico, investigating how digital comics can address common challenges in EFL distance learning: low literacy rates, limited multimodal media, and bandwidth-friendly materials. A cross-year analysis from 2020 to 2024 reveals that early in the pandemic, digital comics served as a catalyst for crisis teaching, but the subsequent increase in publications in the post-pandemic period validates the potential of digital comics in long-term distance EFL learning. Further research is recommended to explore the effectiveness of digital comics by collaborating with current teaching techniques; increasing the credibility of the SLR main source selection process with statistical analysis; and expanding the research string to explore more main sources for this SLR study.
