LEARNING ANALYTICS RESEARCH TRENDS IN TURKIYE: AN ANALYSIS OF POSTGRADUATE DISSERTATIONS
Abstract
Big data is essential for the sustainability and future of education. Learning analytics helps extract information from educational raw data, guiding data-driven decisions for learners and instructors. As studies on Learning Analytics continue to increase, examining research in a specific country provides valuable insights into the field’s development. In Turkiye, LA has been explored for over a decade, evolving in response to contemporary technological trends. This study analyses research trends in postgraduate dissertations on LA in Turkiye, using a systematic literature review to explore general trends, methodologies, and research outputs. The results indicate a massive preference for mixed research methods and educational data mining as primary research methods, while studies primarily involved university students as samples, using academic achievement tests and learning management system logs for data collection. Classification and parametric methods were implemented for data analysis, revealing that LA can effectively predict academic progress and identify success factors. However, methodological limitations were noted due to the field’s emerging nature, with suggestions for future research concentrating on technical dimensions. We believe that the study’s findings will shed light on future research directions, contribute to the existing literature, and inform stakeholders on how to position LA in educational institutions strategically.
