Analysis of the Impact of Current Transformer Polarity on the Performance of Directional Protection Elements in Protective Relays

Abstract

This paper demonstrates that the polarity of the current transformer (CT) is a critical determinant of directional overcurrent protection selectivity. Analytical modeling and hardware-in-loop testing confirm that a reversed CT polarity introduces a predictable 180° phase shift in the measured current. This phase inversion corrupts the directional element’s torque calculation, resulting in nondiscriminative relay behavior: failure to trip for internal faults and spurious tripping for external faults. These polarity-induced errors remain latent under steady-state conditions and manifest only during fault events, precisely when protection must perform reliably. The findings highlight the necessity of incorporating CT polarity verification into commissioning, routine maintenance, and compliance audits. They further emphasize that digital relay performance is fundamentally dependent on the integrity of its analog inputs.
