A Research on Housing Characteristics of Cattle Enterprises; The Case of Erzurum, Narman

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the problems and to suggest solutions by determining the structural characteristic of barns in the cattle farm enterprises in Narman county of Erzurum province. For this purpose, data obtained from a survey conducted face to face with 208 owners of the enterprises. In the enterprises, the percentages of the tied-free stall barns and tied-stall barns and free-stall barns were 55.3 %, 75 %, 6.3 % respectively. Average capacity of the barns was determined as 38 cattle. Additionally, the average age of the barns was determined as 17.1 years. Percentages of the enterprises that used stone for construction of the barn walls, concrete for the barn floor, sheet medal for the barn roof and wooden material for the feeder were 55.0 %, 43.8 %, 48.1 % and 48.1 % respectively. Just 63 % of enterprises had feed alley, 47.7 % of them had 2 windows and 45.7 % of them had 1 chimney, 40.0 % of them had 2 chimneys. While 91.3 % of the barns didn’t have a delivery chamber, it was found out that cattle in 88.5 % of the enterprises were fed together in the same barn. Moreover, 78.8 % of the breeders used bedding materials in their barns and 87.8 % of the breeders used dry manure as bedding material. Furthermore, 76.9 % of them stored the manure next to the barns without covering. Manure was spread to the farms as manure in 53.4 % of enterprises, while it was used as fuel in 38.0 % of the enterprises. To solve problems such as barn types, ventilation and utilization of manure in Narman county, education and encouragement are needed.
