Combining Ability of Some Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Hybrids in Line x Tester for Elbistan Conditions-I; Fiber Yield and Fiber Yield Components
Abstract
Development new cultivar with high fiber yield for
different environmental conditions in cotton is main target of cotton breeding
that is very important plant for Turkey. Whereas, fiber production is under the
influence of a large number of properties, which they have complex relationship
and are manage by many genes. The study was carried out in Elbistan plain in
2012 in order to determine or develop new varieties with high fiber yield,
after the fallowing of hybridization which made in Kahramanmaraş conditions in
2011 year. Elbistan is located at high elevation (about 1100 m-1500 m) from sea
level in Turkey, and junction of Mediterranean, Central and Eastern Anatolia
Regions, that has got short period for cotton cultivation. In this study, eight
cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties (lines: Stoneville 468, Adana 98 and
Furkan, testers: Beli İzvor 432, Primera, Berke, Nazilli 663 and Fantom) and
fifteen F1 hybrid were used as plant material that obtained by Line x Tester
mating design, and planted in a randomized block design with four replications
for investigate nine properties, which effected on fiber yield. In this study,
eight cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties (lines: Stoneville 468, Adana 98
and Furkan, testers: Beli İzvor 432, Primera, Berke, Nazilli 663 and Fantom)
and fifteen F1 hybrid were used as plant material, that obtained by Line x
Tester mating design. After that, parents and hybrids planted in randomized
block design with four replications for investigate nine properties, which
effected on fiber yield. As a result of the study, while the parent fiber
yields were range 50.04 kgda-1 (Furkan) to 102.83 kg-1 (Fantom), fiber yields
of the hybrids ranged from 59.1 kgda-1 (3x7, Furkan x Nazilli 663) to 113.3
kgda-1 (1x4, Stoneville 468 x Beli İzvor 432) and very important differences
determined among of hybrids, parents and genotypes for fiber yield.
Furthermore, lines, testers and line x tester interaction supported to lint
yield 40.77%, 33.77% and 25.46%, respectively and choice of genotypes are found
very important for maximum lint yield for Elbistan conditions, which they have
to combined high seed cotton yield and gin out turn like 1x4 F1 (Stoneville 468
x Beli İzvor 432) hybrid and Fantom cultivar.
