The Bahtiyâr-nâme works constitute a significant corpus within the masnavi genre
of our literature. These works comprise nine narratives nested within a primary
storyline, following a frame story structure. Embedded within the sub-narratives,
characterized by elements of adventure, readers encounter didactic lessons
pertaining to proper behavioral norms. Concurrently, the overarching framework
delves into the pedagogical methods suitable for grooming a prospective monarch.
Poets frequently employ compelling narratives to underscore the essential qualities
requisite of an ideal ruler. Originating in the latter half of the 14th century,
Bahtiyâr-nâmes were initially rendered into our vernacular, either in verse or prose.
This investigation particularly focuses on the verse form of Bahtiyâr-nâmes. It
juxtaposes the narrative techniques employed by two poets from distinct epochs:
Pîr Mahmûd b. Pîr Alî from the 14th century and Ömer, purportedly active in the
15th century, in their respective masnavi compositions. Commencing with an
exposition on the fundamental aspects of masnavi verse, the study proceeds to
synopsize the thematic content of Bahtiyâr-nâmes, drawing upon primary sources.
Subsequently, the analysis section systematically enumerates the recurring motifs
present in both masnavi works, which serve as the groundwork for comparative
examination. The study then assesses the utilization of these narrative elements in
a comparative framework. Additionally, this investigation aims to illuminate the
manuscript tradition of Bahtiyâr-nâmes, which remains underexplored in scholarly
circles and awaits due scholarly attention in library collections.
