Analysis of the Hysteresis Effect in Unemployment by Different Groups in Türkiye: Evidence from Multiple Structural Breaks and Fourier Unit Root Tests

Abstract

Unemployment, which is among the most familiar macroeconomic problems of Turkey, is among the main instabilities that have been struggled for many years. This situation strengthens the suspicion that there is a hysterical effect on the unemployment rate. From this point of view, the aim of the study is to investigate the existence of hysteria effect in youth, female and male unemployment rates as well as general unemployment rates in Turkey and present a specific perspective to policy makers and researchers. Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2009) multiple structural break unit root test, Forurier ADF (FADF) and Forurier KPSS (FKPSS) unit root tests were used in the study, which was carried out with the data belonging to the 1988-2021 period. The findings obtained according to the unit root test with multiple structural breaks are that there is a hysterical effect in general, youth, female and male unemployment. However, other empirical findings; It supports that the hysteria hypothesis is not valid only in youth unemployment according to the Forurier ADF test and only in male unemployment according to the FKPSS test.

Türkiye’de Farklı Gruplar İtibarıyla İşsizlikte Histeri Etkisinin Analizi: Çoklu Yapısal Kırılmalı ve Fourier Birim Kök Testlerinden Kanıtlar

Abstract

Türkiye’nin en tanıdık makroekonomik sorunları arasında yer alan işsizlik, uzun yıllardır mücadele edilen temel istikrarsızlıklar arasındadır. Bu durum işsizlik oranı üzerinde histeri etkisinin var olduğu şüphesini güçlendirmektedir. Bu noktadan hareketle çalışmanın amacı Türkiye’de genel işsizlik oranlarının yanı sıra genç, kadın ve erkek işsizlik oranlarında histeri etkisinin mevcudiyetini araştırmak, politika yapıcılara ve araştırmacılara spesifik bir bakış açısı sunmaktır. 1988-2021 dönemine ait verilerle gerçekleştirilen çalışmada, Carrion-i-Silvestre vd.(2009) çoklu yapısal kırılmalı birim kök testi, Forurier ADF (FADF) ve Forurier KPSS (FKPSS) birim kök testleri kullanılmıştır. Çoklu yapısal kırılmalı birim kök testine göre elde edilen bulgular genel, genç, kadın ve erkek işsizlikte histeri etkisinin bulunduğu yönündedir. Ancak diğer ampirik bulgular; FADF testine göre sadece genç işsizlikte, FKPSS testine göre ise sadece erkek işsizlikte histerisi hipotezinin geçerli olmadığını destekler niteliktedir
