Evaluation of surface roughness of different restorative materials containing glass ionomer

Yıl 2013, Cilt: 30 Sayı: 1, 13 - 7, 11.03.2013

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of various pH levels on surface roughness of different type glass ionomer-containing restorative materials.

MATERIALS AND METHOD: Five different types of restorative materials containing glass ionomer were selected for the study. The materials used in the study were inserted into rectangular prism metal molds with 3x3x2 mm dimensions and polymerized. The specimens were kept in citric acid solution with varying pH levels (pH 2-6) at 37 oC for a week. Then, surface roughnesses were determined by using a profilometer with a tip diameter of 5 µm.

RESULTS: As the pH values decreased, surface roughnesses increased. Greatest alterations were reported for conventional glass ionomer cement and nano ionomer groups. In the giomer group, relatively low surface roughness was observed.

CONCLUSION: Change in the surface roughness as a result of exposure to low pH is associated with the type of the glass ionomer restorative material. Restorative materials that contained greater resin portion were less affected by low pH levels.
