Russell and Cosmological Argument: Theism-Atheism in terms of Explanatory Power

Leibniz's cosmological argument aims to deduce the existence of a necessary being from the existence of contingent beings, based on the principle of sufficient reason. According to this argument, contingent beings, whose explanation is not found within themselves, require a necessary being for their existence to be explained. In contrast, Bertrand Russell argues that seeking an explanation for the totality of contingent beings at once is meaningless and illegitimate. This study evaluates Russell's criticisms of the Leibnizian cosmological argument. Firstly, Russell's idea that the concept of a necessary being has no meaning is examined. Subsequently, Russell's thesis that the whole does not need a cause or explanation just because its individual parts have causes is critically discussed. The consideration of Russell's categorical judgment is important for the assessment of the explicative power and rationality of atheism. On the other hand, the question of whether a sufficient explanation demanded by theism for the existence of the universe can be provided within an atheistic framework is debatable. This article argues that a suitable and reasonable response to the demand for a sufficient explanation for the universe can be provided within a theistic framework.

Russell ve Kozmolojik Argüman: Açıklayıcılık Açısından Teizm-Ateizm

Öz

Leibniz’in kozmolojik argümanı, yeter neden ilkesine dayanarak olumsal varlıkların var olmasından zorunlu bir varlığın var olduğu sonucunun çıkarılmasını hedefler. Buna göre, varlığının açıklaması kendisinde bulunmayan olumsal varlıklar, varlıklarının açıklanabilmesi için zorunlu bir varlığa ihtiyaç duyarlar. Bertrand Russell ise olumsal varlıkların bütününe birden bir açıklama arayışı içerisine girmenin anlamsız olduğunu ve meşru olmadığını savunur. Bu çalışmada, Russell’ın Leibnizci kozmolojik argümana yönelttiği eleştiriler değerlendirilmiştir. Öncelikle Russell’ın zorunlu varlık kavramının bir anlamının olmadığı düşüncesi irdelenmiştir. Daha sonra ise Russell’ın âlemin tek tek parçalarının bir nedeni olmasından bütününün bir nedeni veya açıklaması olması gerekmediği tezi eleştirel bir biçimde ele alınmıştır. Russell’ın bu kategorik yargısının ele alınması, ateizmin açıklayıcılığının ve rasyonelliğinin değerlendirilmesi açısından önemlidir. Diğer yandan, teizmin âlemin varlığı için talep ettiği yeterli açıklamanın ateistik bir çerçevede verilip verilemeyeceği ise tartışmalıdır. Bu makalede, âlem için yeterli açıklama talebine teistik bir çerçevede uygun ve makul bir karşılık verilebileceği savunulmaktadır.
