On the Relationship between Communication and the Philosophical Way of Life in the Phaedrus

Claude Mangion [1]

The expression philosophy as a way of life has been attracting more attention in recent years primarily due to the work of Pierre Hadot. This paper develops this theme by reading the Phaedrus utilizing the conceptual resources of the philosophy of communication.  It will be shown that the various forms (rhetorical, mythical and dialectical) and media (spoken and written) of communication in the text are intimately interwoven with a certain conception of philosophy that show how our utterances can contribute to the ideal of living philosophically.   And it will be further argued that these utterances – even if they are written texts – can also serve as sources that inspire the reader to pursue philosophy as a way of life.
