Investigation of Primary Mathematics Teacher Candidates’ Mathematical Modelling Competencies Through Model-Eliciting Activities

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine pre-service primary mathematics teachers’ mathematical modeling competencies in the process of Modeling Eliciting Activities, the extent to which the activities they design comply with design principles, and their views on this process. A qualitative research approach was adopted, and a case study design was employed. The study group consisted of fourth-year pre-service primary mathematics teachers studying at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University. Among the activities developed during the implementation process, five highly original ones were selected and analyzed in detail. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and a six-level rubric for modeling competencies. The findings revealed that the activities were largely aligned with the principles of reality, self-assessment, and documentation of structure; however, none of the activities satisfied the principle of model generalization. In terms of modeling competencies, the participants were successful in understanding the problem, simplifying it, and mathematizing it, but they experienced difficulties in validating and interpreting the model in relation to real life. Interview data indicated that the modeling process increased the participants’ self-confidence and helped them recognize the role of mathematics in daily life. Unlike the existing literature, the need for technology use, such as GeoGebra, emerged directly from the pre-service teachers’ self-assessments of their own limitations and difficulties in the process. This finding suggests that teacher education programs should include more practical applications supporting model generalization and validation, and enrich the process with dynamic tools.

Model Oluşturma Etkinlikleri Sürecinde İlköğretim Matematik Öğretmen Adaylarının Modelleme Yeterlilikleri, Tasarım Becerileri ve Görüşlerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilköğretim matematik öğretmen adaylarının model oluşturma etkinlikleri sürecindeki matematiksel modelleme yeterliliklerini, hazırladıkları etkinliklerin tasarım prensiplerine uygunluğunu ve sürece yönelik görüşlerini incelemektir. Nitel araştırma yaklaşımı benimsenen çalışmada durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Çalışma grubu İstanbul 29 Mayıs Üniversitesinde öğrenim gören dördüncü sınıf ilköğretim matematik öğretmen adaylarından oluşmaktadır. Uygulama sürecinde geliştirilen etkinliklerden özgünlüğü yüksek beş tanesi seçilerek incelenmiştir. Veriler betimsel analiz ve modelleme yeterlilikleri için altı basamaklı dereceli rubrik ile analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlara göre etkinlikler gerçeklik, öz değerlendirme ve yapıyı belgeleme ilkelerine büyük ölçüde uygunken model genelleme ilkesini karşılamamıştır. Modelleme yeterliliklerinde adaylar problemi anlama, sadeleştirme ve matematikselleştirmede başarılı, ancak modeli doğrulama ve yorumlama aşamalarında zorlanmıştır. Görüşmeler, sürecin özgüven kazandırdığını ve matematiğin günlük yaşamla ilişkisini fark ettirdiğini göstermiştir. Literatürden farklı olarak, teknoloji kullanımı gereksinimi GeoGebra gibi dinamik araçlara yönelik ihtiyaç şeklinde doğrudan adayların öz değerlendirmeleriyle ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu bulgu, öğretmen eğitimi programlarında model genelleme ve doğrulamayı destekleyen uygulamalara ve dinamik araç kullanımına daha fazla yer verilmesi gerektiğini göstermektedir.
