Year 2002, Volume: 18 Issue: 52, 1 - 36, 01.03.2002

Abstract

Abstract

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was not only a founder of modern Turkey, but also a world leader who had because a source of inspriation for many countries, especially for the Müslim ones. For instance, in Indonesia, which lies in the far east region of the Islamic vvorld and is a largest populous Müslim country of the world, many intellectuals were inspired from the works and ideas of Atatürk in Turkey and they felt great respect for him. Therefore, this article aims to focus on the echoes and the impacts of Turkish national movement conducted under the leadership of Atatürk towards the European expansionist countries and of the various reforms achived by him in Turkey afterwards. In this respect, we tried to investigate the following subjects to a large extent by using the Indonesian sources as well. These include mainly Atatürk’s military achivements in the national struggle and the impacts of Turkish national movement on Indonesia, the echoes of the abolition of the chaliphate in Turkey upon the Indonesian Müslim people, the influences of the reforms conducted by Atatürk in Turkey upon the Indonesian intellectuals and finally the discussions on the form and structure of the proposed future independent Indonesian State between the nationalist intellectuals and the Islamic leaders. In short, vve can conclude that the Indonesian intelligentsia, parlicularly those nationalist leaders who were concerned vvith the struggle of their country’s independence, followed very closely the developments in Turkey, and that the impacts of Atatürk and Turkish revolution upon this country were very great.
