Understanding Law Through Map Metaphor
Abstract
Using the structure of maps as a metaphor is illuminating for understanding normative
orders. Maps represent reality by distorting it through specific mechanisms
and so do the normative orders. The tension between norm and fact resembles the
tension between spatial reality and its representation. It is being offered by Santos
to use scale, projection and symbolisation mechanisms of maps as analytical tools
for creating a new approach to analysis and conceptualisation of normativity under
complex contemporary conditions. This method helps paying attention to the constructed
nature of normative constellations and the power relations underlying the
legal reproduction of social reality. Although it may be related with the concept of
legal plurality, map metaphor is also useful in terms of a more general analysis of
normative plurality
