Year 2025, Volume: 8 Issue: 3, 257 - 262, 22.10.2025

Abstract

EVALUATION OF FACTORS RELATED TO PRENATAL DEPRESSION

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objective: Depression is a common mood disorder. Assessing for depression in pregnant women is important due to both the mother's and child's health. The well-being of the mother’s mood is also beneficial for the unborn child.
Methods: This study was conducted at Kocaeli University Hospital's maternity clinic. The study included pregnant women who were at least 34 weeks along. A questionnaire with thirteen socio-demographic and pregnancy-related items was administered face-to-face to 200 pregnant women who gave their consent for the study. Following that, a test using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale was conducted1,2.
Results: 17.5% percent of the participants had a score of 12 or above on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). A significant correlation was found between those with a history of mental illness and EPDS. While there was a significant relationship between EPDS and family type, no significant relationship was found when compared with other socio-demographic characteristics.
Conclusion: Peripartum depression can occur, and many factors affect pregnant women. Its frequency is too high to be underestimated in pregnant women. The physicians should apply EPDS as a screening test for infant and maternal health and go to early diagnosis and treatment in the risky group.
