Die Gabriel-Platte in Antalya. Rekonstruktion und ursprünglicher Kontext

Abstract

A fragment of a marble plaque, now housed in the Antalya Museum, is decorated in relief on both sides. On the front is the figure of the Archangel Gabriel holding a globe in his hand. On the reverse is a Latin cross. That the figure is oriented to the right and the plaque has a profile with a thick edge on this side indicate that this plaque actually bordered a doorway. The Archangel Michael would have been depicted on the corresponding symmetrical piece. This plaque was produced in the 5th to 6th centuries AD and reused during Islamic rule. The globe that the Archangel Gabriel holds in his hand was transformed to a disk with an inscription reading Allah in Arabic. This door installation must have been in a large, significant church in the city. In the Ottoman period, Gabriel’s plaque was moved to a new location, presumably a mosque, and incorporated into it.
