The Effect of the Process–Genre Approach on AI-assisted and Multimodal Writing

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of process-genre-oriented writing methods on middle school students' skills in informative text writing, AI-assisted writing, and multimodal text creation. The study was conducted using a sequential embedded mixed methods design, in which the quantitative component employed a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent, pretest–posttest control group design. Qualitative data were collected through interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The study was conducted with 7th-grade students over a 5-week, 13 h training period encompassing the pre-test, training, and post-test phases. Results from valid and reliable rating scales were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and were supported by interviews. Three rubrics were developed for this study. The analysis results demonstrated a significant difference in favor of the experimental group. The themes derived from the qualitative data indicated that students found this approach practical, that it helped them develop positive attitudes towards writing, and that it contributed to their writing skills.
